SUMMARY:"Laura's Choice" - film and panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Arts Margaret River is proud to host the film “Laura’s Choice” . \nLaura’s Choice is a powerful and deeply personal documentary following 90-year-old Laura Henkel\, who decides to end her life on her own terms.\nAsking her daughter Cathy and granddaughter Sam — both filmmakers — to document her journey\, Laura sets out to challenge taboos around death and the right to choose when and how life ends. After a life-changing illness\, she pursues legal assisted dying in Switzerland\, inviting her family to accompany her in her final days. As three generations navigate this emotional and complex path\, they confront differing views\, ethical questions\, and the reality of saying goodbye. Honest\, confronting and ultimately moving\, Laura’s Choice explores dignity\, autonomy\, and the deeply human experience of facing the end of life. \nIncludes a Panel Discussion at the conclusion of the screening with Director Cathy Henkel\, Voluntary Assisted Dying Practitioner Ray Borcherds and sociologist and author Dr Christian Mauri facilitated by Pam Townshend.

SUMMARY:Matters of Life and Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:“What is your Matters of Life and Death Cafe?“??? \nIt sounds rather odd\, right? Matters of Life and Death.  Believe it or not\, it has become a space for people to come together and have honest and direct conversations about death stuff. \nThe common topics are \n\n“What to do when?”\n“What is an Advanced Care Plan\, and what does it do?”\n“What happens to me after I have gone? Where does the body go?”\n“What types of celebrations can I have? or How can I be loved and remembered. “\n\nSo many other questions\, and some are a lot more personal too. \nIt’s not a counselling space.\nIt’s not a grief group.\nIt’s a welcoming space for people to meet and connect. \nIt’s a space to ask questions\, explore concerns\, apprehension and fears. \nA space to dream of what could be\, and get ideas of what to do\, especially for the funeral/wake/life celebration. \nLet’s face it\, too many people are not comfortable talking about death\, planning their own death or wanting to know more about the life options available to them. \nThere are sooooooooo many ways to do death and farewells.\nYou can design or create anything that aligns with your personality and your wishes.\nYOU need to talk about it and don’t leave your loved ones clueless and guessing!!! \nPlease join us at The Redcliffe Treehouse. Ask all the questions you’re dying to know about. \nTo be honest\, it is a Self-care and loving act for your family and friends\, taking the guesswork out of a very stressful time.  Just think\, it could easily be your last hoora\, and you can plan it down to the smallest detail\, if you choose to.

SUMMARY:Dying to Know Afternoon - Hobart
DESCRIPTION:Dying to Know Day is a national initiative that encourages us to improve our death literacy by starting conversations that many of us avoid. Through this year’s campaign theme\, “Nobody Knows – The Secret I’m Glad I Shared\,” we’re reminded that talking openly about death\, dying and grief can help us better support one another and reduce the uncertainty that often comes when important conversations are left unsaid. \nTo mark Dying to Know Day\, Palliative Care Tasmania invites community members to join us for a relaxed coffee chat followed by a gentle walk along the Hobart Rivulet. This is not a formal support group or therapy session. Instead\, it is a welcoming opportunity to connect with others and explore the conversations that can sometimes feel difficult to have. \nIf you’re not feeling up for the walk on the day\, you’re welcome to join us just for a coffee. Whether you’d like to share your story\, listen to others\, or simply enjoy the companionship of those around you\, you are warmly welcome. \nEvery conversation helps build a more compassionate community. We hope you’ll join us. \nDate: Friday 7th August \nTime: 1.45 pm for a drink followed by a casual walk\, \nMeet Location: Hamlet Hobart Cafe\, 40 Molle St

SUMMARY:With the end in mind
DESCRIPTION:Port Macquarie hosts its very own dying to know day event\, with the end in mind. \n8th August is national dying to know day.  A day that encourages open\, honest\, conversations about death\, dying and end of life planning.  It aims to reduce the stigma and silence around these topics. \nThis years theme is nobody knows.  Because nobody knows how to talk about these important matters of life\, we don’t often have the space or the time to explore whats important to each of us. \nTwo 2 local grief educators\, Kellie Hartnell White and Rod Cole\, plan to host a series events in the region\, starting with a discussion on 8th August at Port Macquarie Library from 230pm to 4pm.  The free 90-minute event and afternoon tea will look at the dying process\, explore what we fear about dying and what we hope for\, and equip people with a guide to how to prepare for a conversation. \nWhether you’ve experienced loss\, are supporting someone who is grieving\, or simply want to feel more comfortable having these important conversations\, everyone is welcome. No prior experience or knowledge is needed—just an open mind and a willingness to listen and reflect.
