SUMMARY:Painting Workshop - Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Join Belong Club for our painting workshop where Paola will demonstrate how to finish your  painting of a gorgeous Hippo named Blinky that you started in part one. This can be done with acrylics\, pastels or even fine crayons. \nIn this one hour workshop\, Paola guides you through a variety of accessible materials. Paola will be happy to answer any questions you have to get started or move forward on your painting journey. \nWhether you’re looking for a unique gift for a friend’s birthday\, or you want to indulge in a fun activity\, or try a new art project or painting style from the comfort and convenience of your home. You’ll finish feeling creatively inspired\, and ready to keep practicing your new skills. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter – Paola Matthews\nPaola is an emerging artist\, based in Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Paola is self-taught and proficient in both pastels and acrylics. Paola was also commissioned by SBS for two portrait paintings\, which were then exhibited for a series on “Inspirational Women”. Write your own eulogy\, honour someone you’ve loved and lost\, or explore what it means to face endings with openness.\nYou’ll have the option to share your piece in a supportive space — and with consent\, your words can become part of the collaborative casket installation. \n☕ 2:30pm – 4:30pm | Cark It Café — A Death Café with a Twist\nSettle in with a cuppa for an open-hearted conversation\, not a counselling session. Death Cafés are about sharing experiences\, reflections\, and thoughts around death in a safe\, non-judgemental space. \nAt this Cark It Café\, we’re adding our own twist — guest speakers who bring insight\, lived experience\, and practical knowledge to help us navigate the often-avoided topic of death and dying. \nYou’ll hear from: \n\nZoe Hinton from ACON’s LOVE Project\, offering tools and information from the Taking Control Toolkit — a vital resource for older LGBTIQ+ folks and people living with HIV.\nScott Read from Palliative Care NSW\, a queer nurse and passionate advocate for person-centred end-of-life care\, drawing from both clinical and personal experience.\nPlus more…\n\nHolding Space at Cark It Café\nWe’re joined by Jude Tynan (she/they)\, a skilled and compassionate Mental Health Social Worker and Family Therapist.\nJude specialises in working with the LGBTIQ+ community\, survivors of adult and childhood trauma\, complex family dynamics\, and relationship difficulties. \nFrom 10:00am–4:30pm\, Jude will be there to simply sit\, listen\, and hold space.\nLearn more: opendialogue.com.au/jude-tynan \nThis is a space for connection and dialogue — whether you’re here to listen\, speak\, or simply be in community. \n🎟️ Workshops are ticketed — from single tickets to day packages.\nNobody will be turned away for lack of funds — please email Jewelz at carkitcafe@gmail.com to make arrangements. \n☕ The Death Café is FREE\, but you must register to attend. You’ll also have the option to make a non-tax-deductible contribution to help cover event costs — should you wish to support. \nThis event also supports Myeloma Australia in memory of my Big Bad Baba — you can donate here: 🔗 justgiving.com/page/jewelz-cark-it-cafe \nAcknowledgements & Gratitude \nThis project is supported by the City of Sydney Creative Grants and the Dying to Know Day grants. \nBig thanks to: \n\nACON The Love Project\nDaisybox® — for donating the strong\, simple\, and sustainable cardboard casket made from recycled cardboard\, weighing just 7kg\, and designed to be personalised with messages\, artwork\, and love.\nPalliative Care NSW\nDying to Know\n\n\nJoin us for this special first event in the Cark It Café series — where creativity meets mortality\, and community meets courage.

SUMMARY:Young Adult Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Curious about the big questions in life? Join us at a penthouse in Ultimo\, a 10 minute walk from UTS for a special Death Café event\, exclusively for young adults aged 18-25\, as part of our annual Dying to Know Day campaign. In this open\, respectful\, and confidential space\, you’ll have the opportunity to express your thoughts and feelings about life and death. Facilitated by experienced members of our team\, Carolyn and Jordan\, this event encourages meaningful conversation on mortality\, loss\, and grief over some light refreshments. \nWhether you want to share your experiences\, ask questions or simply listen\, everyone is welcome. Life\, death and everything in between. Connect with other young adults over topics that we all experience but rarely have open conversations about. Refreshments will be provided. \nLet’s come together to break the taboo and build a community where talking about death is a normal and healthy part of life. We look forward to seeing you there! \nNote \nThis event is not a counseling session or support group. It is a space for open discussion and shared experiences.

SUMMARY:DED - Leaving Euphemisms for Dead
DESCRIPTION:You know those classic phrases like ‘Rode into the Sunset’\, ‘Croaked It’\, ‘Pushing Up Daisies’\, and ‘Kicked the Bucket’? They’re practically part of our linguistic DNA. Wikipedia has 62 entries on its ‘List of English-language euphemisms for death’ page. But why do we dance around the word ‘death’ with these euphemisms? Perhaps it’s for our own comfort\, or maybe it’s to soften the impact on others\, or perhaps we’re just skirting around the inevitable. \nUsing euphemisms as the provocation\, or the muse\, join poet Clare Bizley\, and visual artist and fashion designer Marlene Kranz\, to respond to one or all the euphemisms. Blow them up\, confront them\, ponder their purpose\, rearrange them\, write a skit\, write your own\, or reframe them. The choice is yours. \nDeath Education and Discussion (DED) sessions take place on the first Saturday of the month and are an opportunity to tackle the topic of death from different angles. All sessions are respectful\, curious\, and may include creative elements. \nThe August DED session is generously supported by the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund\, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia.
