SUMMARY:Financial Support Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Breast Cancer Care WA is proud to host this informative\, pragmatic webinar with experienced oncology social worker\, Shirley Witco. \nCancer and ongoing treatment can place financial barriers and cause extra financial strain in a person’s life. Even more so for people living in rural and remote locations. Shirley will discuss potential options for income and assistance and how to access these. This will include Centrelink\, superannuation and insurance\, financial grants\, charities and emergency relief. While everyone who is interested is welcome to attend\, this webinar will be most relevant for people living with metastatic/advanced cancer\, their loved ones\, and health professionals. \nShirley has been a health social worker since completing her Bachelor of Social Work in 2005 and has spent the majority of her career to date working in cancer care. She worked for 15 years at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth supporting cancer patients and their families in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Shirley moved regionally in 2021\, taking the role of the senior social worker with the Kimberley Integrated Cancer Service team. Based in Broome\, she supports patients and families from around the Kimberley region through treatment (delivered locally and travelling to Perth) and into survivorship/surveillance. \nShirley is also an active member of Oncology Social Work Australia New Zealand (OSWANZ) which is an organisation supporting and educating social workers to enhance psychosocial services to people with cancer and their families. \n

SUMMARY:NDAN present... Momento Mori: The Art of Contemplating Death to Live a Better Life
DESCRIPTION:Many of us in the contemporary Western world view death as purely negative—something to be pushed out of our minds\, shunned\, and avoided. Thinking about death\, particularly one’s own\, is seen as morbid\, if not downright pathological. But\, not long ago\, contemplating death was widely used as a powerful tool that helped us fear mortality less\, put the difficulties of our lives in perspective\, and live according to our higher values. (It still is\, in some places.) By coming to terms with our own death\, we were understood to become wise. \nThis richly illustrated talk—based on Morbid Anatomy founder’s new book Memento Mori: The Art of Contemplating Death to Live a Better Life\, will look at a number of the ways that people in different times and places have befriended\, imagined\, pictured or related to death. We will look at psychopomps—literally\, “soul guides”—understood to help people move through the dying process. We will learn about the “books of the dead\,” guides to preparing for a good death and afterlife experience. And we will investigate the memento mori (Latin for “remember you must die”)\, which are objects\, works\, or practices meant to remind one of their death in order to help them ascertain their true values\, and live them out in the world\, so as to die with the fewest deathbed regrets. \nJoanna Ebenstein is the founder and creative director of Morbid Anatomy\, an internationally recognized death expert\, award-winning curator\, photographer\, graphic designer\, and teacher. \nThe Natural Death Advocacy Network (NDAN) is a growing Australian network and advocacy partnership of community facilitators\, professionals\, activists\, and educators\, working within the field of end of life\, dying\, and death. \n\nDate\nSaturday 9 August 2025 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (UTC+10)\n\n\nLocation\n\n\nOnline event access details will be provided by the event organiser

SUMMARY:AHFA DYING TO KNOW DAY EVENT
DESCRIPTION:Living Wakes are becoming more popular with Australians as the years go by and people start to rethink funerals\, celebrations\, memorials and all the nice things people say when someone dies. In this special Dying to Know Day event\, Annie Whitlocke and Edwin Quilliam will share their personal stories\, reflections and experiences with living wakes and share when they meant and how they worked.  \nAnnie Whitlocke\, AHFA Co-Opt Member\, has been a death doula for 14 years\, pet death doula\, trainer for death doulas and pet death doulas. She is Team leader for Social Health Australia\, Buddhist chaplain and Pastoral Carer for Monash Health. \nEdwin was born and raised on a farm and went on to own and manage his own patch of dirt in NW Tassie. Moving to Hobart to study counselling lead to him ‘falling into’ the funeral industry. He has learned most of the roles involved over the past18 years and loves them all. His great passion now is funeral celebrancy work. Having been involved in a living funeral at his work and hearing about them from various sources he hatched a plan to spring one of his own on his family and friends.

SUMMARY:Young Ambassadors launch and quiz (Dying with Dignity Victoria)
DESCRIPTION:The focuses of this year’s Dying to Know Day are personalising final arrangements and building community. Dying with Dignity Victoria are planning to do both by launching their new Young Ambassadors initiative on Aug 8th. \nThe Young Ambassadors are young people from across Australia who are passionate about improving access and quality of end-of-life choices\, including VAD. This national initiative seeks to provide these young people with the information\, skills and platforms necessary to champion these causes. \nYou can hear directly from the Young Ambassadors about why they are getting involved and what they would like to achieve here: https://youtu.be/PuFRPGoxGs4?si=-EgzwqEKTYUChJK2 \nTo kick off their launch on D2K day\, the Young Ambassadors have created a quiz on end-of-life decision-making ‘Are you ready to die?’. You can support them by completing the quiz here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RV2763X \nThe Young Ambassadors welcome supporters of all ages and from across Australia to connect with them through their newsletter and social media.  \nIf you are a young Australian (under 50 years of age) and are passionate about improving end-of-life care and are\, or have specific insights/experience assisting a young person to navigate end-of-life care\, we would love for you to join our Young Ambassador Network.  \nPlease visit our website for more information: https://www.dwdv.org.au/about-us/dwdv-young-ambassadors/
