“This is why I volunteer my time”: Unlocking Memories, a Walk with Walter
David is a volunteer with Proveda who spends time with Walter each week. We chatted with David about his experience.
In the gentle embrace of a balmy coastal breeze, David and Walter embark on their weekly beach walk. David, a dedicated volunteer with Proveda, accompanies Walter, a gentleman living with dementia. Together they traverse both the contours of the coastal landscape and the memories within Walter’s mind.
“That’s ok as we like to walk and chat, laugh, and walk some more.”
Their conversations span the spectrum of human experience, from reminiscing about old flames to recounting youthful escapades of wild nights. They delve into weighty matters like the geopolitical landscape and the nuances of climate change, all while sharing hearty laughs over anecdotes and jokes.
“I also tell him my best jokes to make him laugh. Some work, some don’t, but you’ve got to try, right?”
Despite the fog of dementia, Walter’s memories remain accessible, waiting to be unearthed through trust and sensitive conversation.
“It’s amazing how much information you unlock with perseverance.”
Through laughter and storytelling, they bridge the gap between past and present, creating connections that transcend the limitations of memory loss.
“There’s always lots to learn about life through Walter’s eyes in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.”
But it’s not just about nostalgia. David guides their discussions, gently coaxing Walter’s thoughts and perspectives, nurturing the spark of cognition.
“My aim is always for Walter to have a good time. I try to support him by prompting his thoughts on a given topic and repeating back his answers.”
In the rhythm of their stride, amidst the distant sound of waves, Walter finds his voice, his memories, his essence, alive once more.
As their walk concludes, David is met with gratitude from Walter.
“When I shake hands with Walter at the conclusion of our walk, he always thanks me profusely for our chat and our walk. He is such a gentleman.”
For David, volunteering is more than just a commitment; it’s a source of joy and fulfillment.
“This is why I volunteer my time; I love spending time with these incredible people.”
David’s dedication not only enriches Walter’s life but also helps him find meaning and purpose in the act of giving back.
Dementia may affect one part of the brain, but with trust and sensitive conversation, there is still a wealth of memories waiting to be unlocked. To David, and all volunteers like him, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your dedication illuminates the path for others to follow, reminding us all that amidst the challenges of dementia, there remains the beauty of shared moments.
