Interested in becoming a Connector?

The Compassionate Connector Program is a unique program that connects volunteers – Connectors – with people in the community who are over 65 living with life changing diagnosis. As a connector you will emotionally support and help build social networks with your person, as well as family and friends around them. This is a little different to traditional volunteering, as an essential part of your support is to find additional supports in the persons community. This can be connecting with a neighbour, helping connect with formal services, or arranging for help in the persons existing network with everyday tasks like getting to appointments etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am wondering if this is for me. What happens if I don’t want to commit to the Program after training?

The training is intended to give you a good understanding of the Program and to prepare you for this unique type of volunteering. We ask that when you register for this complimentary training if you have the intention of becoming a Connector with us. However, if you during or after training feel you would rather engage in other volunteering opportunities with us (or elsewhere) that is absolutely fine.

How much time am I expected to give each week?

There is no set time expectation and you can discuss what time you have available with our  Coordinator during the application process. Likely you will have regular weekly contact with your person, however this can also be less often. We will match you with a participant so that the time you have available works for both you and your person.

What can I expect of the training?

The training is structured as one evening followed by a full day. This allows our small group to get to know one another, which creates a meaningful and reflective learning environment. We also try to bring in guest speakers to our trainings to talk about specific topics or experiences. After the training our hope is that you leave excited to be part of this program and filled with useful knowledge. If you make a friend or two that is an added bonus too!

What support is available to me throughout this program?

Volunteering in the end of life space can be challenging and it is important to us that you enjoy the experience and feel fully supported. Our hope is that you will make connections and friends through this program. Our coordinator will also have regular check-ins with you after your meetings, in the way that works best for you. The Program also offers regular training and reflection opportunities with other volunteer Connectors. These will happen both online and face to face.

What skills do I need to be a Connector?

To be a connector you need to be a caring community member and a good listener. It also helps if you are curious about end of life and want to learn more about resources available to best be able to support and connect your person in the community Some connectors have previous work experience in caring roles of some kind, but this is not a must.
